San Diego City College Facilities Master Plan

Client: San Diego Community College District

San Diego City College has served students for more than 100 years with student learning and success as its highest priority. This academic priority is directly coupled with a commitment to address the future needs of campus life and infrastructure. As part of the Facilities Master Plan, RNT studied the existing campus, its needs and challenges, and developed planning sensitivities that act as penchants to facilitate the progressive advancement of the College to meet the demands of its rapidly growing community. SDCC's Athletics and Exercise Science programs are among the campuses most popular and fast-growing; thus, it was critical for RNT to listen carefully and evaluate the Department's facilities needs in order to match growing demand.

RNT has completed several major projects on the City College campus in addition to the East Village South Focus Plan, providing the master plan team with deep knowledge of the campus and its immediate context, –proving invaluable for studying ways to strengthen campus identity, pedestrian safety, and neighborhood connections. The master planning process began with information gathering. This included several site walks with faculty members and department heads to gather information regarding the efficacy of existing facilities. Recurring themes about campus facilities, concerns, and opportunities were revealed by questionnaires distributed to a wide array of staff and faculty in addition to several virtual meetings and open forums arranged with different stakeholder groups.

The projects outlined in the Facilities Master Plan are now being implemented through several Design-Build projects, funded by the Measure HH bond. RNT Architects is working on the replacement of Saville Theatre with Sundt Construction.
