1980:
The Beginning -
Ralph Roesling starts his own company and
aptly names it, Ralph J. Roesling, Architect,
AIA. Needing assistance to build a condominium
model, he seeks help from Kotaro Nakamura,
who works with Mun Ying Kung's (Ralph's wife)
sister. Kotaro then brings in Chikako Terada,
whom he met through a mutual friend, to help
and together they work on their very first
project. After its completion, they continue
to collaborate with Ralph on additional projects.
1983: The Partnership
Forms - Ralph and
Kotaro decide to form a partnership, Roesling
Nakamura and Partners. Chikako, a recent graduate
from the SDSU School of Environmental Design,
is hired on as an employee.
1985: Becoming
a Corporation - RNP changes from
a partnership to a corporation, Roesling Nakamura
Architects, Inc. The acronym RNP is retained
(we didn't like the sound of RNA). Mun becomes
a shareholder.
1992: Mun Joins
the Firm - Mun
leaves the structural engineering firm she
started and joins RNP.
1995: Joe Arrives
- Joe Mansfield, a former
student of Kotaro's at SDSU, joins the firm.
1996: The Office
Expands - RNP wins
the contract for a large project and moves
to a bigger office to accomodate staff that
grows from 10 to 20+ people. Midway through
the year, Chikako becomes a principal.
1997: A Sister
Office is Born
- While working on a project in San Francisco
with another firm, we meet Lisa Gelfand and
a great relationship develops. Upon completion
of the project, Lisa and RNP launch a sister
office in San Francisco named Gelfand RNP.
2001: Joe Becomes
a principal - Joe
joins the ranks and becomes a principal at RNP.
2004: A New Evolution
- Many years and projects
later, our name evolves to Roesling Nakamura
Terada Architects, Inc., in recognition of
Chikako Terada's contributions to the firm
from its inception.
2005: New Growth
- Expansion continues with the opening of
the Oxnard office in Central California, creating a link that forms our
west coast chain of operations.
